About Ruth

Natural therapist, author, artist and craftsperson Ruth Sharkey is perhaps better known as the natural therapist who helped thousands of ‘infertile’ couples to conceive beautiful healthy babies, or as the author of eight books - 3 of which made the best-seller list.

However it is not so well known that Ruth has used painting as her preferred form of relaxation for many years.

By mail, email and fax and in person through her clinic on the Gold Coast she, with her husband Dennis, cared for over 20,000 patients from around thirty countries for over 20 years,

During this time Ruth still found time to attend evening classes with The Brin Jones Academy of Fine Art, where she learned the intricacies of working with graphite and pastels.

Coming from a large family of artists she always had plenty of encouragement, so when it came for her well earned retirement it is no surprise that she did another course in painting, this time with the acclaimed fine artist Michael McMahon and also with the Gold Coast Academy of Art.

Ruth is always thinking of the viewer, and takes pleasure from including some sort of activity or small detail that the viewer may not notice at first glance. Inspired by the natural environment she use many different modalities including pastel, graphite and oil paints, as well as creating mosaic pots and other handicrafts.

Since moving to Tasmania in 2004, Ruth has continued her hobby, painting all manner of subjects from boats to roses and birds to horses, many of which have been successfully exhibited all around the state. Among her many achievements was being chosen as winner of the 'Mayor's Choice' at the Clarence Art Exhibition in July 2010.

If you would like to see more of Ruth’s art or find out more about her books these can be found at www.sharkeys.com.au, public libraries and good book stores.
